Make Work Transitions Work for Your Family

Job security is top of mind for all of us these days.  It seems you can't turn on the TV or open a newspaper without reading about another round of lay-offs.

If you're looking to make a job change, voluntarily or not (and we certainly hope that's not the case for you!), there is a good chance that some sort of move will be involved.  Whether it's a move to a new career or a move to a new city, here are a few things you can do to make the transition a smooth one.

Transitioning to a New Job:

·         Make a Plan and Stick to It:  Create a schedule for your weekly job search activities, seek out networking opportunities and fine-tune your family budget if necessary.

·         Get Career Counseling:  If you've lost your job and your employer doesn't provide career transition help, visit your local One Stop Career Center, where you'll find a host of employment-related services, including career counseling, training and job listings.

·         Fight Stress:  Spend quality time with your friends and family; play with your kids at the park or enjoy other fun activities together; get adequate rest and eat healthy; and exercise - check out your local YMCA and take advantage of its financial assistance program if needed.

Transition to a New City:

·         Visit the area with your family before making the big move to help ease the fear factor -- visit schools and churches, and check out the neighborhood where you'll live.  Explore the fun things the community has to offer.

·         Get a relocation packet from your new city's Chamber of Commerce or Visitor's Bureau; it will help you identify healthcare and childcare providers, as well as other important service providers.

·         Stay with Value Place if you need temporary lodging before moving into your new house.  With top-notch security, laundry facilities and a kitchen in your room, Value Place can be a great option for families in transition.
